We had an incredible time eating and exploring Accra! Jamestown, Accra, Ghana - We started off this Ghanaian street food tour of Accra in Jamestown, along the coast in Accra. The neighborhood is home mostly to a fishing community, but they also are known for having some of the best boxers in Ghana. We walked around Jamestown, and tried a few snacks and drinks along the way. Palm wine - 2 GHC ($0.40) Egg - 1 GHC ($0.20) per egg Tigernut milk - 2 GHC ($0.40) Kenkey (Kenkey - West African staple made from ground corn) and fried fish - After walking around Jamestown, we found a small restaurant to eat kenkey, a common Ghanaian staple made from corn, and here, eaten with fried fish. The restaurant was awesome, and the owners were very friendly. We ordered some food, and also had the chance to watch some of the cooking production. This was probably my favorite meal of this entire Ghanaian street food tour. Total price - 20 GHC ($4.30) for all We continued eating our way through Accra, here are a few more of the meals and snacks we tried: Kelewele and gizzard - 5.5 GHC ($1.20) Coconut - 2 GHC ($0.40) per coconut Mama Vee Waakye - We couldn’t have an ultimate Ghana food tour without eating waakye, and so Majeed took me to one of his favorite spots. Waakye is a beloved Ghanaian food, a mix of many different things, and it’s incredible delicious. It wa also a huge plate! Price - 13 GHC ($2.80) Hwe Nea Nyame Aye Chop Bar (translated to “See what God has done” restaurant) - For one of our final meals of the day, we stopped at one of their favorite local neighborhood restaurants to eat fufu, along with massively giant jungle snails. They were delicious. Price - 26 GHC ($5.60) Chinchinga - Many places around the world offer grilled meat on skewer over charcoal, and in Ghana they are called chinchinga. Especially if you enjoy meat, you can’t miss them. Price - 3 GHC ($0.60) per stick It was an incredible day of street food in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. Korean food tour on Incheon Airport layover! ►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe ►T-shirts available now: https://migrationology.com/store/ Flying from Bangkok to Honolulu, my wife and I had a 14 hour layover at Incheon International Airport. I’ve been to Seoul a few times already, but I had actually never been to Incheon, the city where the airport is really located. So we decided to head into Incheon city, eat as much as possible on our airport layover, then return to the airport to catch our next flight. Sinpo International Market - We started off at Sinpo International Market. It was extremely cold, and we were freezing! Sinpo Charm (신포참닭강정) - Sinpo Market is known throughout Korea for their amazing Korean fried chicken which is known as dakgangjeong. It’s a sweet spicy fried chicken, and you’ll find about half a dozen restaurants in this market serving it. The chicken was pretty tasty and addictive, but it was too sweet for me. Total price - 18,000 KRW ($16.86) Coffee - 8,700 KRW ($8.15) for 2 - It was so unbelievably cold in Incheon, that we couldn’t really walk around very long, so we stopped to have a cup of coffee and warm up a bit. Korean BBQ (탑숯불갈비) - This was one of the best Korean barbecue kalbi (beef short ribs) experiences I’ve had in Korea. It was a friendly family run restaurant and everything from the short ribs to all the sides, were spectacular. If I had an Incheon Airport layover and wanted to leave the airport, just eating a Korean bbq meal like this would be worth it. Total price - 32,000 KRW ($29.97) Americano - 4,000 KRW ($3.75) - We had another cup of coffee, it was so cold. Hongdubyeong (홍두병) - 2,000 KRW ($1.87) - Incheon, South Korea, is famous for its Chinatown. Although it was a bit quiet when we went, it was still nice to walk around. There’s a snack you have to try called Hongdubyeong (홍두병). Sang-Won (상원) Restaurant - Finally to end this Korean food tour of Incheon on our layover, we went to one last restaurant to eat a dish you can’t miss when you visit Incheon - Jajangmyeon. It was my first time to really have an authentic version of the dish, and even though it doesn’t look all that appealing, it’s absolutely delicious. Incheon is the birthplace of jajangmyeon, which is a Korean Chinese dish. Total price - 13,500 KRW ($12.64) Taxi from Incheon to Airport - 37,500 KRW ($35.12) We were so tired, we decided to take a taxi back to the airport. And it proved to be much easier and not that expensive than public transportation. I’d recommend just taking a taxi if you go to Incheon during your airport layover. From Cape Coast, Ghana, we drove inland to Kumasi, a major city in the central Ashanti Region of Ghana. I was excited to sample authentic Ashanti food, and to spend just a short time exploring Kumasi. The drive from Cape Coast took about 4 hours. Fufu for Lunch - When we arrived, we were all quite hungry and so we stopped at a local chop bar (Ghanaian local food restaurant) for lunch. I’m not really sure of the name of this spot, or I don’t even think it really had a name written on it. But it was a popular neighborhood spot, especially known for their fufu - a West African staple food of pounded plantain and cassava. I had it along with a mix of palm nut soup and a variety of meats. Fufu mix - 18 GHC ($3.80) per bowl Ashanti Food Cooking in Kumasi, Ghana - The main activity food activity of the day was meeting a host family and going to their home to cook and experience authentic Ashanti Ghanaian food. Before going home, we stopped at a local market in Kumasi to buy some vegetables, and some essentials for the cooking, especially taro leaves. Kontomire stew - I didn’t really know what we’d be cooking, but learned it was a dish called kontomire stew, a stew made from fermented fish for flavor and mostly taro leaves (also called cocoyam in Ghana). The leaves were boiled and ground with garlic and spices, then doused in boiling palm nut oil to finish it. The dish was served with boiled green plantains and cocoyams that you could dip into the kontomire stew. It was also amazing to eat with avocado, and the highlight of my day was eating with the entire family. This is the final video from this Ghana food and travel series! Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
