I like to drink beer. I like to try new beers and I do so regularly. But, I don't think it's something to get snobby about. I guess this is as close to a rant as I get. Be cool. Drink good beer (whatever that means to you). And, enjoy life. That's what it is all about. I'm James Knott and this is AskJames -- where you leave your questions and comments in the comment section and I use those to make next week's episode. Think of your question while you sit back and watch this week's episode. (Crack the beer) Strangebrewsings: Beard = beer geek (which I think you would admit that you are not). Now I'm not sure that I agree with that quasi-mathematical statement -- beard equals beer geek. Here is a freeze frame of Stone CEO Greg Koch when he appeared on the BetterBeerAuthority and here is a picture of him with a massive beard some time later. Both men love beer the same. Formula disproved. There is no correlation between beards and love of beer. Then, Strangebrewsings goes on to say: beer geek (which I think you would admit that you are not). But I didn't get that. So, this is a question for you at home. Am I doing something that gives off the impression that I am not a beer geek? Do you think I am a beer geek? I mean, I did admit to enjoying a Corona in the last episode of AskJames and I've been very upfront about the fact that I only drank Miller Lite before I started this show. But, I have produced a weekly talk show about beer for over three years with over 150 episodes. I've consumed beer from about half of Ratebeer's Top 100 breweries in the world. I've had 5 of the Ratebeer's Top 10 Beers and have two more waiting for me in my beer cellar. I have a beer cellar. I brew beer from time to time. I've researched tons of beers and beer styles and know way more about beer than your average person. I try AT LEAST one or two new beers every week. And even though I've never tried to count how many beers I've tried, it has to be well over 500. But, I don't talk about those stats that often. That's because I think the measure of a man has nothing to do with the number of beers he has consumed or the price of those beers. A man should be judged by how he treats his friends -- and his enemies -- how he cares for his family - for contributing more to society than he extracts from it -- for trying to be a good steward to the planet. Generally, if you make the world a better place, then it doesn't really matter if you drink a Bud Light while you do it. But, the Better Beer Authority has changed me. It's changed my tastes. I no longer crave Miller Lite. I get more excited about Imperial Stouts and IPAs and I find them more satisfying. I've tried so many beers that I never would have without the show and it's been fun & exciting. Whether I come off as a beer geek or not, I don't know. What I do know is that I don't want to be a beer snob. And, I hope that through the Better Beer Authority I am not creating beer snobs. I prefer to think of myself as a beer enthusiast, or better yet, a beer adventurer. My hope is that the people who watch the show have been inspired to get a little more adventurous with their beers. It's fun. But if I, through the show, have turned someone into a beer snob, then I am not proud of that. I'm ashamed. Snobs don't make the world better. They look down on other people, in this case, because of the beer they drink. They buy expensive beers to make themselves look cool rather than because they taste good. They turn down beers that are offered to them because they are too good for them. If you are drinking beer with a friend and he chooses to drink a Coors Light and you make fun of him for that while you drink something fancy from Alesmith. That doesn't make you a better person than him. It makes you a douchebag. If someone offers you a beer at a party that you wouldn't normally drink, it's ok to politely decline it. But there is no need to make a negative comment about the beer. Most likely, it will just make that person feel bad. I personally would just accept the beer regardless and focus on the fact that I am enjoying time with my friends. GianniStunato made a comment that applies to this: Well interesting that Rogue Maple Bacon turns people off. My friend loves this and while I do not go crazy for this, he loves it and I cannot question that. "He loves it and I cannot question that." Please remember that phrase the next time someone you know doesn't like the same beer that you do. If they drink a Milwaukee's Best and they are happy with it, then that is all that matters.
